Precision Mapping Streets and Travler v9 from UnderTow Software

Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 9 (PMap 9) is now available from Undertow Software.

Note - earlier versions of PMapServer MUST be removed before installing version 9. If you have run an earlier version since booting, restart your computer BEFORE installing PMapServer 9. If you have UI-View set to automatically start when Windows starts, temporarily disable this feature.

Install and register Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 9.

Download and install PMapServer9.

Set the data path to the PMap 9 installation folder.

>>> Download PMapServer9

There are a number of references and instructions on this site for installing PMapServer 7. Those instructions will be fine-tuned over the next day or two to reflect the availability of PMap 9 and PMapServer9, but the short description should get you going if you have already received your copy of PMap 9.

PMap 8 / PMap 7 Instructions

On these pages, Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 7 and 8 are sometimes referred to as PMap 7 and PMap 8. PMapServer 7 is the server that allows maps from that program to be used in UI-View.

Once again, Undertow Software has provided UI-View/PMapServer7 users access to a new version of their detailed Street mapping software of the US and Canada. Users must purchase, install, and register Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0 with Undertow before using with UI-View/PMapServer7, but see the special instructions below for the order that things must be done in. See Undertow's website for purchase and upgrade details. If you purchase the new version, it may be a good idea to let Undertow know you are a UI-View user by entering UI-View as a company name when purchasing the product via the web or by phone.

Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0 has updated street level data, new POI's for the US and Canada as well as the ability to import shp and Mid/Mif files. This last capability could allow users outside the US and Canada to display street level data (with several limitations) provided access can be had to non-copyrighted or public domain street level data for the areas of interest. I would be happy to work with anyone who wishes to import non-copyrighted or public domain street level data files for areas outside the US and Canada.

Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0 will work with PMapServer7 but a few changes to (default location) C:\Program Files\Peak Systems\PMapServer7\MapPro71.cfg will be required.

If you do not edit and update C:\Program Files\Peak Systems\PMapServer7\MapPro71.cfg or use UI-View to change the Precision Mapping data directories after Installing PMap 8.0 then UI-View/PMapServer7 will do one of the following:

  1. If Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 7.0 is still present on your system, PMapServer7 will use the PMap 7.0 street files, not the new, updated PMap 8.0 Street files. POI's will NOT display.
  2. If Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 7.0 has been removed or is not present, you will not see any local streets or POI's when you zoom in with UI-View/PMapServer7.

Installation Instructions:

There are two sets of instructions below. The first is for use if Precision Mapping 7 / PMapServer 7 are already installed and in use. The second is for a fresh install if neither have been previously installed.

To Upgrade An Existing Installation Currently Using Precision Mapping 7.0

  1. Shut down UI-View before installing PMap 8.
  2. REBOOT
  3. Install Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0. Follow the instructions!!!!! Remove Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 7.0 before proceeding with the install. Otherwise, you may have
    some problems which may be difficult to correct.
  4. Register the PMap 8 installation with Undertow.

NOTE: ONCE YOU HAVE INSTALLED AND REGISTERED PMap 8.0 DO NOT re-install PMapServer7! This can cause unexpected difficulties. A new PMapServer7 will soon be created to eliminate this possibility.

PMapServer7 modification instructions

(assumes you have installed PMap 8 in the default directories (VERY good idea):

  1. Start UI-View after PMap 8.0 has been installed and registered with Undertow.
  2. Click on Menu "Map", "Control Panel", "Options", "Precision Mapping Data Paths".
  3. Select "Data1" & navigate to C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA1
  4. Select "Data2" & navigate to C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA2
  5. Select "Data3" & navigate to C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA3
  6. Select "States" & navigate to C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\States
  7. Shut down UI-View.
  8. Restart UI-View. PMap 8 streets will now be available for display.
  9. POI data will NOT display unless you modify
    C:\Program Files\Peak Systems\PMapServer7\MapPro71.cfg
    to include the path to the new data4 directory. See instructions below for adding POI display.

Add POI Display:

  1. Shut down UI-View and PMap 8.0 if running.
  2. Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files\Peak Systems\PMapServer7 folder.
  3. Open MapPro71.cfg with notepad or other text editor.

You should see the following:

[DATASOURCE]
DATASRC=6
[Directories]
CDSTATE=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\STATES
CDDATA1=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA1
CDDATA2=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA2
CDDATA3=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA3
CDSTATE1=C:\PROGRAM FILES\PRECISION MAPPING STREETS AND TRAVELER 8.0\STATES
CDDATA4=C:\PMAP60\Data4

Make the following CDDATA4 modification to MapPro71.cfg
     (assumes PMap 8 installed on Drive C in the default installation directories):

[Directories]
CDSTATE=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\STATES
CDDATA1=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA1
CDDATA2=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA2
CDDATA3=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\DATA3
CDSTATE1=C:\PROGRAM FILES\PRECISION MAPPING STREETS AND TRAVELER 8.0\STATES
CDDATA4=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\Data4

Note the directory name changes (if upgrading & the default installation directories were used) from:

C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 7.0\

To...

C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\

Also an additional directory (POI's) is added:
CDDATA4=C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0\Data4
You must add the above line if you want POI's to display.

Once the change has been made, save the modified MapPro71.cfg back to
C:\Program Files\Peak Systems\PMapServer7\MapPro71.cfg

You can now start UI-View. The new streets will appear when zoomed in. Same for the new POI information. Note: UI-View/PMapServer7 appears to mangle the POI icons at the present time. I will look into this and hopefully provide a fix or workaround.

Installation of PMap 8.0 when PMap 7.0 was NOT previously used

Here are some instructions for a UI-View user who does NOT currently have Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 7.0 or PMapServer7 on their system and wishes to install them PMap 8:

  1. Shut down UI-View
  2. Install PMapServer7 FIRST
    This installs the OLD version of MapPro71.OCX and registers it
    with Windows. Also installs the required DLL and support files.
    NOTE: This differs from the original installation instructions
    for use with the old Precision Mapping version 7.
  3. Run the "Init PMapServer7" shortcut the above install creates.  This:

    1. Creates configuration and support files in the PMap server folder, including PMapServer7.ini that later will store the path to Precision Mapping's data files. It also creates the file !!PmapServer7.INF  which will later be copied into the UI-View installation folder.   In other words, you should see more than one file in the PMapServer 7 folder.
    2. Communicates with the Windows registry to find out where Uiview32.exe is located, and then copies the file !!PmapServer7.INF  into the \MAPS folder located below the main UI-View folder.  This file must be present in this location to allow "Precision Mapping Server V7" to show up in the list of loadable maps in UIview.

  4. Install and Register Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0.
    This installs the NEW version of MapPro71 and registers it with windows. The old one (installed by PMapServer7 in step 2) is then never used again. In a fresh install of Precision Mapping 8, if you install PMapServer7 AFTER PMap 8, you will have problems. Again, these instructions are for users who have NEVER installed Precision Mapping 7 or PMapServer7 on the target machine before.
  5. Run PMap 8.0 and register it via the Undertow web site and then shut down PMap 8.0.
  6. Using Windows Explorer, copy the file MapPro71.cfg from the Precision Mapping program folder and paste it in the PMapServer 7 installation folder. This ensures that PMapServer7 will be using the correct mapping data directories.
  7. Start UI-View.
  8. Select "Map - Load a Map" and then select "Precision Mapping V7 Server" from the list.

The above assumes the user installed both applications in the default directories (STRONGLY recommended) and in the order outlined above.

The proper OCX should now be installed and registered with Windows. PMapServer7 should read the data directories in the MapPro71.cfg file copied in step 5. When you zoom in on the map you should see streets appearing. If you do not, then follow these instructions:

  1. Select menu "Map", "Control Panel", "Options" "Precision Mapping Data Paths", "Easy Setup"
  2. When the dialog box appears, navigate to the "C:\Program Files\Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8.0 data directory, then hit OK
